Hong Kong Bledisloe will go ahead

HONG KONG: The fourth Bledisloe Cup Test between New Zealand and Australia will go ahead in Hong Kong next month despite sluggish ticket sales, both teams said on Wednesday.

The confirmation came after suggestions that the match could be moved to London's Twickenham stadium, with only 14,000 tickets sold so far.

"Both the New Zealand and Australian rugby unions are fully supportive of the Hong Kong fixture and are committed to bringing one of world rugby's legendary matches back to Asia," said New Zealand Rugby Union chief Steve Tew.

"The upcoming end of year tour is vital for both teams going into 2011 and I know the All Blacks will be looking to put in a strong performance to kick off their tour on the back of a successful Tri Nations campaign."

After New Zealand's last-gasp 23-22 victory last week in Sydney, both teams have everything to play for as they finalise their preparations for tours of the northern hemisphere.

Australian Rugby Union chief executive John O'Neill promised an edge-of-the-seat thriller at the 40,000-capacity Hong Kong Stadium on October 30.

"The quality of rugby in this year's Bledisloe Cup series has been outstanding," he said.

"These are the best two teams in world rugby and the one point separating them in Sydney last Saturday night underlines the closeness of the contest.

"There is also no doubt that the game, as it is currently being played in the southern hemisphere, is as exciting as it has been at any other time in memory.

"We're confident the match in Hong Kong will be another entertainment package no sporting fan would want to miss."

The Wallabies and the All Blacks have played each other in Hong Kong and Tokyo over the last two years to generate income and try to develop rugby in Asia.

Earlier this month, O'Neill said that Hong Kong would mark the last time the two teams played four Bledisloe Cup Tests in the one year and that they were not looking to take any future Tests offshore.

Hong Kong Rugby Football Union's Trevor Gregory encouraged people to snap up tickets.

"With the world's two top-ranked teams set to contest the latest match in their century-old rivalry, the Bledisloe Cup in Hong Kong promises to be another historic moment in Hong Kong rugby," he said.

The DHL Hong Kong 2010 Bledisloe Cup match will bring world Rugby’s two top ranked teams and one of its most eagerly anticipated matches to Hong Kong.

The All Blacks and the Qantas Wallabies will battle it out in what is billed to be a ferocious game following their last nail-biting 23-22 match in Sydney.

All Blacks vs Qantas Wallabies Live Streaming Rugby Online – Bledisloe Cup Rugby 2010

This famous and very large silver cup was first contested in 1931 when the then Governor-General of New Zealand, Lord Bledisloe, presented the Cup as a perpetual Rugby trophy and a token of good will between Australia and New Zealand.

Since then it has been variously contested as a single Test match or as a two or three Test series. With the establishment of the Tri Nations series in 1995, it became a fixed two match series played on a home and away basis.

The Wallabies regained the Bledisloe Cup in 1998 with a three nil series victory, and retained it again in 1999 with the series drawn one all. The 1999 Bledisloe Cup match in Sydney provided a world record Rugby crowd of 107,046 at ANZ Stadium (formally known as Stadium Australia).

Australia went on to retain the Bledisloe Cup for the next three years until 2003 when a very classy All Blacks team won back the Cup in convincing fashion and in 2004, they only needed one game against Australia to retain the Cup.

In 2005, New Zealand repeated their efforts from the year before with victory against the Wallabies in Sydney.

Whilst in 2006, it was expanded back to a three match series, as part of an expanded Tri Nations series, with the All Blacks sweeping the series 3-0 after victories in Christchruch, Brisbane and Auckland and keeping the Cup of their side of the Tasman for another year.

In 2007, the series was a two-match series due to the Rugby World Cup, with Australia winning the first match, New Zealand the second, and as the current holders of the Bledisloe Cup, they retained the trophy for another year.

The Tri Nations will become the Four Nations in 2012 should the inclusion of Argentina as the fourth team go ahead. Argentina has been invited to join but there are a number of conditions that they have to fulfill.

The series is played on a home-and-away basis. From the first tournament in 1996 through 2005, the three teams played each other twice. Since then, each team has played the others three times, except in the Rugby World Cup year of 2007 when the series reverted to a double round-robin. Tri Nations Background

The New Zealand All Blacks have dominated the Tri Nations series, winning the competition no fewer than eight times, including the inaugural event in 1996 and the past four championships in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

The competition is traditionally played between the months of July to September each year these years Tri Nations 2010 fixtures can be seen here. Each team plays six fixtures in the series, playing the other two team three times. This was increased from each team playing four fixtures prior to 2006.

The increase is to accommodate the growing demand for the competition from television audiences not just in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa but from a growing interest in the competition from countries in the Northern Hemisphere such as the United Kingdom who have the Tri Nations Championship fixtures are played across all three countries.

With each of the teams playing three of their six games at home, coming up against one team twice and the other just once. The overall winner is determined by the team who comes out of their six match series with the most points, with four points awarded for a win and two points for a draw.

A bonus point is available if the winning team scores four or more tries in a game and the losing team is also eligible for the bonus point if the margin of defeat is seven points or fewer in addition to the bonus point if they have scored four tries and still lost.

The Tri Nations Championship Winners have never been decided by a tie breaker; however, if two of the teams finished with the same number of points in the competition the winner is determined by the team with the best tries scored/conceded points’ difference.
